Toy Team Volunteer

As a member of the Toy Team, you play a significant role in creating the warm, comfortable and safe experience that families and children have at Ronald McDonald House. You will work closely and collaboratively with the Family Programs Coordinator as well as other staff and volunteers at the House.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with the public in a warm and friendly manner
  • Good organization skills and communication skills
  • Comfortable with decision making and problem solving
  • Understand and practice confidentiality
  • Willing to share your time and energy 
  • Possess qualities of friendliness, dependability, tact and flexibility
  • Initiative; able to work independently
  • Able to pass a background check and provide 2 personal references

Responsibilities:

  • Commit to a weekly shift
  •  Always wear your nametag for every shift
  • Adhere to all RMHC-SK Procedures, Protocols and Policies 
  • Sort toys and return them to their “home”
  • Rotate toys from one area of the House to another to provide a “fresh” play area
  • Make sure all living spaces have toys/games/activities
  • Make sure games/puzzles have all of their pieces
  • Remove broken toys to be fixed or discarded and replaced
  • Ensure batteries in the toys are functioning
  • Make sure all play sets have what they need for children to engage (ie: the Barbie House has Barbies and Barbie has clothes ☺)
  • Organize the Fun Forest and Teen Room – stocking toys in “age-appropriate” areas, identifying any “surplus” of types of toys
  • Rearrange bins in Rowdy Playroom to highlight different toys
  • Clean toys in Rowdy Playroom and Living Rooms. Some toys may need to be laundered. Those toys can be left for Housekeepers to clean.
  • When time allows, go through the books on the bookshelves, sorting into age categories and removing inappropriate reading materials and books in disrepair
  • Use “creative license” to set up displays for kids in the living areas of the House.
  • Make suggestions for toys/games that can be added to the House wish list

Communicate weekly with Family Programs Coordinator to suggest improvements, ideas and needs. This communication is a very important part of this Volunteer Role.

Training and Support 

  • General orientation and training will be provided 
  • Role specific training will be provided
  • Continuing training and support will be offered to all volunteers.

Time Commitment:

  • 1 shift per week for a commitment of 8 months to a year
  • Approximately 2-3 hours

Parking: 

We recognize that parking is a challenge in our community. We would recommend, if possible, that you walk, bike, bus, or get dropped off. If you must drive, we request the following:

  • For visits to the House 2 hours or less, please park on University Drive west of Clarence Ave.

For visits two hours or longer, park in the ONE volunteer parking space in the lot (if open). Alternatively, you can park in a family parking space in the lot if there is one available. If you are parking in the lot, you MUST register with the front desk to ensure we are able to contact you while on your volunteer shift in case of needing to move your vehicle for emergency. Unregistered vehicles may be towed.
